Kuyt strike seals Dutch win

Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt proved the man on the spot for Holland.

Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt proved the man on the spot for Holland as his strike saw off Ecuador 1-0.

A game that will not live long in the memory was settled in the second period as Kuyt registered from close range after debutant Martijn Meerdink had headed Arjen Robben's delivery back across goal.

Marco van Basten's side were far from entertaining all evening, although the absence of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who pulled out before kick-off with flu, hardly helped matters.

Ecuador offered little attacking intent of their own and as they frustrated their hosts, Philip Cocu's strike was the only chance of a dire first 45 minutes.

Carlos Tenorio wasted Ecuador's best chance after Kuyt had broken the deadlock but it was the Dutch that looked more likely to add to their lead in a game best forgot.
