Trundle eyeing Irish call-up

Swansea City striker Lee Trundle is hoping for a Republic of Ireland call-up soon.

Swansea City striker Lee Trundle believes Sunday's Football League Trophy final can boost his chances of a Republic of Ireland call-up.

The 29-year-old sees his Swansea side face League Two leaders Carlisle United at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Sunday, with the South Wales club very much in the hunt for promotion from League One as well.

The former Wrexham hit-man's goals have seen him linked with a move to the likes of Everton this season.

Trundle, who qualifies for Republic of Ireland through his grandfather, hopes a good performance against Paul Simpson's Cumbrians will catch the attention of Ireland boss Steve Staunton.

"Playing for Ireland is something that's still very much on my mind and Steve Staunton knows what I can do because he talked about me when he first got appointed," Trundle said.

"If you're a manager of an international side, then you've got to look at every option possible.

"There's a very good chance that he could be watching the game on television on Sunday, and that could hopefully improve my chances if I do well.

"I was out injured for parts of January and February and the Sweden friendly was straight after that, so my injuries couldn't have come at a worse time.

"But I'm back scoring now and if I can keep doing that then hopefully, I'll get the call-up I've been waiting for."

After beating Wrexham in the FAW Premier Cup final on Wednesday, The Swans could add a second piece of silverware to their cabinet, if they beat Carlisle on Sunday.

Despite having the chance to play in another cup final, Trundle made clear that promotion to The Championship is top of the club's list of ambitions.

"The Welsh Cup and League Trophy are nice pieces of silverware but really they are just a bonus - promotion is the priority," he added.

"We beat Wrexham in the FAW Cup final on Wednesday and if we can beat Carlisle, then that will give us huge confidence for the promotion run-in.

"The gaffer has sat down with us in meetings and drummed it into us how important the league is.

"That's what we've been working hard for all season and the thought of playing in The Championship next season is a great motivation for everyone at the club."
