West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop admits he was so disillusioned with football 12 months ago that he considered hanging up his boots.Struggling to get in to Portsmouth's first team, the Trinidad & Tobago international believed his career was drawing to a close.
However, in the summer, former club West Ham came calling and although initially joining as back-up to number one Roy Carroll, the veteran custodian has been handed more first team football than he would have expected.
Carroll's campaign has been interrupted by injury and of late, Hislop has been rolling back the years with a series of assured displays between West Ham's posts.
''I made no secret of the fact 12 months ago things were going very disappointingly at Portsmouth and I seriously considered retirement,'' Hislop told Sky Sports News.
''You know I wasn't enjoying my football, I just wasn't enjoying how things were going and part of me just needed a career change.
''West Ham gave me an opportunity to continue playing a little bit more. They are a club I have strong passions for so things have turned full circle.
''We're having a very good season and we're very confident of getting to the FA Cup final and I have this summer's World Cup to look forward to.''
