Whitehead leaves Shrewsbury
Gary Peters has continued to wield the axe at Gay Meadow.
Shrewsbury Town manager Gary Peters has continued to wield the axe at Gay Meadow by allowing defender Stuart Whitehead to leave the club.Peters has already let go of midfielders Jay Denny and Jamie McClen as well as club captain Kevin Sharp.
Whitehead is the latest member of The Shrews' squad to be told he is being allowed to move on but Peters has defended his decision to let so many leave before the end of the current campaign.
"Stuart has been asking me for a while whether he would be offered a contract for next season, and when one of the lads asks me I have to be truthful to them," said Peters on the club's official website.
"We need to continue to improve and Stuart's chances have been limited.
"Making the decision now allows Stuart to go out and train with other clubs and try to get a head start.
"Stuart's done a great job for the club and he deserves to know what my plans are early. He's already been contacted by a couple of clubs so hopefully he will be able to get fixed up soon.
"It also helps the club financially with us coming to an agreement early and saves money."
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Lance Cronin (pictured) will go on trial with League One sides Milton Keynes Dons and Yeovil Town.
