Bergkamp aiming for big finish

Dennis Bergkamp is hoping to end his Arsenal career on a high.

Dennis Bergkamp is hoping to end his Arsenal career on a high.

The 36-year-old Dutchman came off the bench on Saturday to play a key part in The Gunners' 3-1 victory over West Brom, capping his performance with a fine goal.

Large sections of the Highbury crowd had turned out in orange on 'Bergkamp day' to honour the striker, who will retire from football at the end of the season.

But Bergkamp is determined to repay the fans with a few more magic moments before he hangs up his boots, as Arsenal look to clinch the fourth UEFA Champions League spot.

"I am just happy that apart from the whole day, it is nice to have come on and really been involved in the game, helping with the second goal and scoring the third," he said.

"Hopefully I can have a few more good moments like that and finish in a good way.

"I have been thinking about it (retirement) a few times over the last few months - especially when you are not really involved, sitting on the bench and you do not come on.

"So this day was special for me because I was playing football again - then you have that memory for your last months, and not one of not being involved."

Bergkamp also revealed that he always intended to see out his playing days in North London, but he doubts whether fellow forward Thierry Henry will follow his lead.

Speculation has been mounting about Henry's future, with several of Europe's top clubs reported to be interested.

"I am sure it is going to be a hard decision because everyone who plays for Arsenal knows how special the club is," reflected Bergkamp.

"Thierry is already a legend and it does not matter what he does.

"He has done a lot for the club and won a lot of things for us. He is a very, very good player for us."
