Gerard Houllier's side may already have been celebrating the championship after Lille raced into a 2-0 lead through goals from Mathieu Bodmer in the first minute and Peter Odemwingie's sixth minute effort.
Jean-Claude Darcheville's 16th minute penalty breathed fresh hope into the visitors but Odemwingie's second goal of the game just after the half hour re-established the hosts' lead.
Julien Faubert's 63rd minute goal hauled the second-placed side back into contention but Les Girondins could not complete the turnaround.
