Etherington waits on England
Matthew Etherington is focusing on West Ham, rather than a call-up to the England squad.
Matthew Etherington admits he is focusing on West Ham United, rather than a call-up to the England squad.
The winger has enjoyed a consistent season upon The Hammers' return to The Premiership and has been tipped for an England call.
Being naturally left footed, Etherington has been mooted as a contender to fill that troublesome role in midfield for The Three Lions.
Though Joe Cole has settled into the position of late, England could also benefit from a player who would provide natural width.
But while Etherington is flattered to be in contention for an England role, the former Under-21 international wants to concentrate on FA Cup semi-finalists West Ham.
"I've heard it mentioned and it's nice," Etherington told The Independent about being able to challenge Cole for a spot on the left.
"If I keep doing well and it's good enough, then great, but it's out of my hands.
"I want to concentrate on West Ham, the club that took me on three years ago and showed faith in me.
"I think I'm paying them back now. I'm certainly giving them as much as I've got."
