Speed backs InterToto route
Gary Speed has urged Bolton Wanderers to consider playing in the InterToto Cup.
Gary Speed believes Bolton Wanderers should play in the InterToto Cup if they fail to automatically qualify for next season's Uefa Cup.The Trotters are set to miss out on Europe after a poor run of form has placed them two points behind Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United in the race for sixth spot.
Speed and co are desperate to relive this season's adventure in the Uefa Cup and the veteran schemer has singled out the benefits of qualifying via the back-door competition.
The former Everton and Leeds midfielder enjoyed success in the tournament with Newcastle and believes Bolton can also reap the rewards if they miss out on sixth.
"The InterToto has negative connotations, but you can work it to your advantage," said Speed. "When I was at Newcastle it helped our season.
"We were top of the league at Christmas and managed to sustain form and finishing fourth, which got us into the Champions League."
