Vanenburg handed Helmond job

Gerald Vanenburg will become the new coach of Helmond Sport this summer.

Former Holland international Gerald Vanenburg will become the new coach of Helmond Sport this summer.

Vanenburg will replace Ruud Brood, who is taking charge of Heracles Almelo, at the end of the season on an initial one-year deal.

However, he does not yet know if Helmond will be competing in the Eredivisie or the Gouden Gids Divisie next term.

Helmond have to play a promotion/relegation game against FC Volendam this Friday, and then play off against either NAC Breda or TOP Oss, in order to secure their top flight status.

Vanenburg, who previously coached 1860 Munich, turned down the chance to manage newly-promoted Excelsior earlier in the month.

Excelsior topped the Gouden Gids Divisie this season to gain automatic promotion to the Eredivisie, and have now set their sights on staying there long-term.

Heracles defender Rudy Jansen will join Excelsior on a four-year deal, while Mitchell Pique and Daniel Guijo-Velasco have already been brought in to strengthen their ranks.
