Van Bommel committed to Barca

Mark van Bommel has snubbed an approach from German titans Bayern Munich.

Bayern are on the lookout for a dominant midfielder to take the place of Michael Ballack and it would appear as if van Bommel came across their radar.

Van Bommel has yet to nail down a regular start at Barca, but he has the club's support as they opted to give Bayern short shrift.

"Three or four weeks ago the German side asked the club about me, but both Barcelona and I said no, because I don't want to leave," van Bommel told Marca.

The 29-year-old joined Barca from PSV Eindhoven on a free transfer last year and has a further two seasons to run on his Camp Nou contract.

After moving to end the transfer speculation, van Bommel explained that the Blaugrana are keen to retain the league title quickly in order to prepare for the UEFA Champions League final meeting with Arsenal.

"We want to win it as soon as possible, preferably against Celta," he explained, looking ahead to Wednesday's trip to Balaidos.

With David Villa scoring regularly for Valencia, Barca striker Samuel Eto'o is in danger of being overtaken in the final weeks of the season again as the league's top goalscorer.

Last term the Cameroon international missed out on the Spanish honour and the European Golden Boot after Diego Forlan moved past him with a spate of goals in the last few games of the campaign.

This time van Bommel believes that Eto'o will not be beaten and explained that everyone at Camp Nou is confident that the striker can claim the Pichichi award.

"He is a great player who we all have faith in," he said. "I am sure he will score in the next few games and will end up as top goalscorer."
