Mallorca move for Varela

Mallorca have reportedly agreed a deal for Real Betis defender Fernando Varela.

Reports in Spain suggest that Mallorca have agreed a deal for Real Betis defender Fernando Varela.

The 27-year-old will become a free agent in the summer and has been at liberty to talk to interested suitors since January.

Betis are looking to try and keep the player, but talks between the two parties broke down last month over financial terms.

As a result, Varela's agent has now opened talks with other clubs with Mallorca leading the chase.

To have any hope of securing the player The Islanders know they must retain their top-flight status, but they took a big step towards achieving that with a 2-1 win over Valencia on Wednesday.

Varela, who has also been linked with Manchester City, has spent his entire career at Betis having come through the club's youth ranks, but a parting of the ways now looks likely.

He has thus far refused to comment on his future, stating: "I don't want to say anything until the end of the season."
