Sutton's six-month deal was due to expire at the end of June but the relegated side have parted company with Sutton already.
Signed from Celtic in January the 33-year-old scored one goal in 11 appearances for Blues during an injury-hit spell in the West Midlands.
The former Norwich striker's contribution to Blues' survival fight was criticised recently by co-owner David Sullivan who believed Sutton's high wages did not represent value for money.
Former club Blackburn have been credited with an interest in Sutton who is now free to sign for another club with immediate effect.
