Sunderland let Woods go

Sunderland have released midfielder Martin Woods after one season at the club.

Sunderland have allowed Martin Woods to leave the club after the midfielder failed to force his way into their first-team plans.

The 20-year-old was one of 14 players drafted in by former boss Mick McCarthy ahead of the Black Cats' return to the top-flight.

However, Woods made just one start under McCarthy, against Arsenal in the Carling Cup in October, despite being praised during a pre-season tour.

Woods is the second player released by the Wearsiders, following goalkeeper Joe Murphy out of the club.

Changes were expected at The Stadium of Light following relegation to The Championship with a full list of those retained by the club expected later this week.
