Tottenham new boy Dimitar Berbatov claims he received an offer to join Manchester United.

It is rumoured that United are looking for a new forward with Ruud van Nistelrooy's future shrouded in doubt and the Bulgaria international reckons he was approached by the Carling Cup holders.

Nevertheless, Berbatov opted to head for White Hart Lane when sealing a switch from Bayer Leverkusen this week.

"I can reveal now that I had an offer from Manchester United and everyone knows what it means but, after talking to Martin Jol several times, I decided to choose Spurs," said Berbatov.

"We went to see Tottenham's match against United last month and, afterwards, I met Martin.

"It was our first meeting but I realised that he's a very special man."

Arsenal were also reported to be showing an interest in the prolific Bundesliga marksman.
