Parreira: Full backs not old

Carlos Alberto Parreira has scoffed at talk Cafu and Roberto Carlos are too old.

Carlos Alberto Parreira has scoffed at suggestions Cafu and Roberto Carlos are too old to make an impact at the World Cup.

The Brazilian full backs have a combined age of 68, although Cafu will turn 36-years-old just before the start of the finals.

Cafu captained Brazil to success four years ago and remains a key figure for the holders on the right flank.

On the opposite wing, Roberto Carlos maintains his enthusiasm for going forward and Parreira is happy with his ageing full backs.

And, rather than subscribe to the theory that Cafu and Roberto Carlos are too old for World Cup duty, the Brazil coach feels their experience is a vital tool.

"It depends on how you can look at it," said Parreira.

"You can see them as old or experienced and, as far as I'm concerned, they are experienced, which is fundamental if you're trying to win a World Cup."

Parreira was also quick to dismiss talk that Cafu and Roberto Carlos are only in the team on their past achievements with Brazil.

He added: "They don't have automatic places in the team, they're not season ticket holders.

"They're here because they've been playing well and, physically, they're in good shape.

"You have to respect the fact that Cafu is playing his fourth successive World Cup, so he will begin as captain.

"They give confidence to the other players."
