Bianchi backs Argentina
Carlos Bianchi believes Argentina will be the team to win this summer's World Cup.
Former Boca Juniors and Atletico Madrid coach Carlos Bianchi believes Argentina will be the team to win this summer's World Cup in Germany. After seeing a Juan Roman Riquelme inspired Argentina defeat Ivory Coast in their World Cup opener, Bianchi expects the South American giants to go all the way and meet rivals Brazil in the final in Berlin on July 9.
"I think that Argentina are going to win the World Cup," said Bianchi. "I have a lot of trust in Argentinian players.
"The team that is going to reach the final is Brazil and I am sure that this Argentinian team can beat them in the final."
The 57-year-old has been impressed by Villarreal midfielder Riquelme all season and is expecting big things from both him and Barcelona starlet Lionel Messi in Germany.
"I know what Riquelme can do for Argentina because he is an excellent player and a very good person," Bianchi continued.
"I hope he has the performance he deserves in the World Cup.
"The team has to play for him so he can demonstrate all the quality he has, just like at Villarreal.
"In addition to Riquelme, Argentina have Messi. I like the way he plays, I hope he is physically fit."
Meanwhile, Bianchi is hoping to return to coaching in 2007 after being out of work since leaving Madrid at the start of the year.
The Argentinian coach is unable to take on another job until his contract with Atletico expires next year, but insists he is happy to stay out of football for a while yet.
"I am enjoying my family life because I can't work for any other team until my contract at Atletico Madrid expires in July 2007," he said.
"I haven't retired from my work."
