Parreira backing for Ronaldo

Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has given his support to under-fire striker Ronaldo.

Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has given his backing to under-fire striker Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's performance against Croatia on Tuesday has been ridiculed almost to the point of cruelty, with many critics calling him overweight and saying that Brazil were effectively playing with ten men.

However, Parreira is expected to keep faith with the 29-year-old in The Samba Boys' next game against Australia, and expects him to respond with an improved display.

"Ronaldo is a big player and he can make a difference. He is very important for the Brazil national team," said the coach.

"We are certain that he will improve. We are giving Ronaldo the ultimate opportunity to improve.

"We have to believe in Ronaldo that he will play better. I believe in his talent."

The lack of energy and mobility in Ronaldo's play was glaringly obvious for all to see and team-mate Kaka, one of the few Brazilians to impress, has urged the forward to work harder.

"A little more movement from him would be ideal," said Kaka.

The Real Madrid star complained of dizziness the day after the Croatia game, and team doctor Jose Luiz Runco suggested that the pressure to play well might have caused him to be taken sick.

"Yes," said Runco. "That could be a reason."

Ronaldo may need to raise his game against The Socceroos if Brazil are to record a second victory, as Parreira is fully aware of the threat posed by Australia.

He is particularly impressed by Guus Hiddink, who guided South Korea to the 2002 semi-finals and has already turned Australia into a dangerous outfit..

"He is a wonderful coach," said Parreira. "I have already invited him to Brazil to take part in a national football forum at the end of the year.

"I respect him a lot. He did wonderful work with the Koreans. He is a wonderful coach. I have no doubt about it.

"It will be a difficult match. Australia are a consistent team. My team have to control the ball and the game all the time."
