Hargreaves: We play to win
Owen Hargreaves insists England can not face Sweden with the aim of getting a draw.
Owen Hargreaves insists England can not head into the game against Sweden with the mentality of trying to secure a draw.
A point against Sweden in Cologne on Tuesday would allow England to finish top of Group B ahead of a second round meeting with Ecuador or Germany.
Bayern Munich midfielder Hargreaves is being tipped to start the match, with Steven Gerrard likely to be given a break to ensure he does not pick up a second yellow card.
Though Hargreaves was unable to expand on Sven Goran Eriksson's plans for the game, he admits the players must go out to beat Sweden.
"I think when you look at the team we put on the pitch, and the individuals we have, any time you just say get a draw, it's not the right statement," Hargreaves told Sky Sports News.
"We look to win every game and obviously the World Cup is a very different stage to league matches.
"I think you've seen the tempo of the games and it's very difficult going out there to win a game.
"We are in a different position of only needing a draw, but we will take the game as it comes."
Hargreaves also believes there is a great sense of camaraderie within the England squad following wins over Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago.
He added: "Any time you spend so much time with each other, you get to know each other really very well.
"There is a great atmosphere within the camp. We won both our games, both to nil, and that's the most important thing.
"Everybody is happy when you see success. We are at stage three of seven games and it will be great to get another positive experience leading into the coming games."
