Tribunal to sort Linwood deal

Chester's pursuit of Tranmere's Paul Linwood has hit a snag because of the player's age.

Chester City's pursuit of out-of-contract Tranmere Rovers defender Paul Linwood has hit a snag because of the player's age.

The 22-year-old made 12 League One starts last season, but has not been offered a new contract at Prenton Park for the coming season.

Ordinarily a player like Linwood would move on a Bosman free transfer, but the historic ruling does not apply to players under 24 years of age moving between clubs within the same country.

If the sides cannot reach a suitable agreement therefore, a tribunal will be forced to officiate the matter.

The hearing would have to determine the player's fee based on the investment made by the club in Linwood over the last 10 years since he joined as a schoolboy, and his potential.

City will then be expected to pay the sum set, if he is to play at The Saunders Honda Stadium in the near future.
