Blackpool have warded off interest from Premiership clubs to keep Matthew Kay.

Blackpool have warded off interest from Premiership clubs to tie Matthew Kay down to a contract.

Kay is regarded as one of the best teenagers in the country and a number of clubs have been keeping tabs on him.

The 16-year-old came to the fore last season after breaking into the side to become the club's youngster ever player.

Kay has agreed a two-year deal which will see him sign his first professional contract on his 17th birthday.

Blackpool youth-team boss Steve Thompson was delighted to keep Kay at Bloomfield Road.

"This is great news for the club, there were a number of Premiership and Championship clubs interested in Matt and we are delighted he's agreed to sign for us," Thompson told the club's official website.

The youngster was also happy to pledge his future to the League One outfit.

"I never wanted to leave this club and I'm delighted to have signed the agreement," noted Kay.
