Pilgrims ditch Yorke bid

Ian Holloway has shelved plans to bring Dwight Yorke to Plymouth Argyle.

Ian Holloway has shelved plans to bring Dwight Yorke to Plymouth Argyle due to the veteran's salary.

Yorke is currently contracted to Sydney FC and is due to return to Australia for the club's pre-season preparations in the coming days.

But new Pilgrims boss Holloway was exploring the possibility of handing the Trinidad & Tobago international a return to England.

The 34-year-old, who trained with former club Manchester United in the build-up to the World Cup, was a serious target for Plymouth.

Holloway, though, admits he was left aghast at learning the forward's wages and has been forced to ditch his interest in the ex-Aston Villa and Birmingham City man.

"Dwight Yorke is on £1 million a year," Holloway told the club's official website.

"I thought that would be a good idea, and I could see if I could talk him into coming over here, but deary me."

With the Yorke interest now at an end, Holloway will look elsewhere in his attempts to add experience to his Plymouth attack.

He added: "I've said to the strikers already that I'm really pleasantly surprised with what I've got, but they know that I'm going to bring in people to help them, hopefully with a bit of experience."
