Marco Materazzi has confirmed an insult sparked Zinedine Zidane's fury on Sunday.
Italy defender Marco Materazzi has confirmed it was an insult that sparked Zinedine Zidane's fury in Sunday's World Cup final.France legend Zidane sensationally saw red after head-butting the Internazionale defender is the closing stages of extra time.
It has been thought Materazzi had a dig at Zidane's mum prior to the flash-point, however, the former Everton man has strongly denied this.
The pair clashed shortly before Zidane was dismissed and Materazzi has confirmed his verbal assault provoked the red mist to descend.
"I held his shirt Ǫ for a few seconds, he turned towards me and scoffed at me, looking at me with super arrogance, up and down," explained Materazzi to the Telegraph.
"Zidane said 'If you want my shirt, you can have it later'. It's true, I shot back with an insult.
"I certainly did not mention Zidane's mother; for me a mother is sacred."
Fifa have already confirmed they will investigate the events leading up to Zidane's reaction by reviewing Materazzi's part in the dismissal.
