Lucarelli stays with Livorno

Cristiano Lucarelli has turned down interest from Zenit St Petersburg.

Cristiano Lucarelli has confirmed that he will remain at Livorno after rejecting interest from Zenit St Petersburg.

It had appeared certain earlier in the week that the forward would move to Russia, with the two clubs striking an agreement for the 30-year-old.

However, Lucarelli has told officials that his heart belongs in Livorno, and slammed the door shut on a possible exit.

"The decision I have taken has not been an heroic act," he insisted.

"I said no to Zenit St Petersburg because I did not want to leave Livorno in this way.

"I want to thank the Russian officials anyway for considering me in this way."

Livorno have reassured Lucarelli that they always wanted to keep him, but were thinking of what would be best for club and player.

The Italian will now join up with the rest of the squad for pre-season training.
