Wolves striker Chris Cornes has been handed a six-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine. The 19-year-old hit-man, who spent part of last season on loan with League One side Port Vale, was tested randomly by The Football Association at Wolves' training ground back in February.
Cornes's sample showed to have the presence of a metabolite of cocaine in his system, thus prompting The FA to charge the teenager with testing positive for a prohibited substance.
Despite being handed a six-month ban, the suspension has been back-dated to April 13 after Wolves had internally imposed a ban on Cornes, meaning he will be eligible to play football come October.
Though his Molineux contract still has two years to run, Cornes's future at Wolves now hangs in the balance as a result of his drugs ban.
"We were extremely disappointed to learn that one of our players had tested positive for a banned substance," Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey told the club's official website.
"Players know the rules and it is constantly impressed upon them that they must act responsibly.
"Taking prohibited substances is totally unacceptable and the 'strict liability' rules put an even greater onus on them to avoid situations that put them at risk.
"We have a board meeting later today (Monday) when we will discuss what has happened and make a decision about the player's future."
Cornes has yet to make a first-team appearance for Wolves, having come through the club's youth ranks.
