Plymouth sign student keeper

Plymouth Argyle have handed a one-year deal to University goalkeeper Josh Clapham.

Plymouth Argyle have handed a one-year deal to former Plymouth University goalkeeper Josh Clapham.

The 21-year-old came into the Pilgrims' ranks earlier this summer following number one Romain Larrieu's illness.

Clapham was drafted into the squad as cover for shot-stopper Luke McCormick, and impressed new boss Ian Holloway in the club's pre-season game against Grays Athletic.

He has since travelled with the club on their friendly tour of Austria and was left pinching himself when selected for the games against FC Gratkorn and Real Madrid, and has now been rewarded with a full-time contract.

"It's been a whirlwind three weeks but I have really enjoyed being here," Clapham revealed.

"Everyone has made me feel really welcome. It's been great."

Larrieu is now starting to return to action, but remains short of fitness, so Clapham is likely to take up a place on the bench for Saturday's first game of the season at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
