McKenna handed armband

Energie Cottbus have appointed Canada defender Kevin McKenna as captain.

Bundesliga new boys Energie Cottbus have appointed Canadian defender Kevin McKenna as the club's new captain.

The 26-year-old former Hearts star, who is also captain of his international side, was chosen by coach Petrik Sander.

McKenna succeeds former Crystal Palace defender Gregg Berhalter as skipper, after the USA international joined 1860 Munich earlier this summer.

McKenna came through the youth ranks at the eastern German outfit, before joining Hearts in 2001.

He returned to Cottbus in 2005 and was an ever-present in the club's promotion-winning campaign and netted an impressive 10 goals last time out, after starting the season as a makeshift striker.
