Doll takes Kirschstein for keeps

Hamburg coach Thomas Doll has confirmed Sascha Kirschstein will start as the number one.

Hamburg coach Thomas Doll has confirmed that Sascha Kirschstein will keep the number one jersey for the start of the new season.

Kirschstein came in to the HSV team in place of injured main goalkeeper Stefan Wachter towards the end of last term.

But with the club's vital UEFA Champions League tie at home to Osasuna on Wednesday, and both shot-stoppers at his disposal, Doll has now made the difficult decision to stick with the 27-year-old Kirschstein.

"He has managed to keep the advantage he had over Stefan from the end of last season during pre-season training and will enjoy our full support," Doll revealed.

"I think two days before the game with Osasuna is the right time to make my decision known."

Doll will be relying on the former Rot-Weiss Essen man to keep the opposition out if his team are to secure their lucrative progression to the group stages of Europe's premier tournament.

The Bundesliga season gets back underway for the AOL Arena side with games against Arminia Bielefeld and Cottbus before the return leg against the Spaniards on August 22.
