Hatters eye Coyne replacement

Luton are looking for a new defender after learning Chris Coyne has suffered an injury.

Luton Town boss Mike Newell says he will look to sign a defender before the transfer window closes after learning that Chris Coyne has suffered a recurrence of a knee injury.

The Australian stopper was plagued by the injury towards the end of last season and suffered again during The Hatters' Carling Cup win over Bristol Rovers.

Coyne had surgery on both knees over the summer break but Newell has confirmed the former West Ham defender will now undergo further checks to assess any damage.

"It flared up on Tuesday after the cup game," Newell stated.

"He will go to a specialist during the week."

With Russell Perrett also in the treatment room The Hatters are desperately short of defenders, and Newell cannot even use striker Steve Howard as an emergency stopper in the same manner as last season after selling him to Derby County.

As a result Newell has revealed he will be scouring the market to provide back-up for Markus Heikkinen and Leon Barnett before Thursday night.

"We're down to the bare bones as far as defenders go, and I want quality to replace the players we're missing," said Newell.

"You can't go into games with just two fit centre-halves. That's just ridiculous."

Over the summer Newell spent money on two strikers, Adam Boyd and Sam Parkin, whilst bringing midfielders Richard Langley and Lewis Emanuel to Kenilworth Road on free transfers.
