Sunderland have opened talks with Sydney FC with a view to signing Dwight Yorke.
Sunderland have opened talks with Sydney FC with a view to bringing experienced striker Dwight Yorke back to English football.The 34-year-old, who stared for Trinidad & Tobago in a midfield role in this summer's World Cup, has been playing in Australia's A-League for just over a league.
Yorke moved to Sydney from Birmingham City, but it was his performances with Manchester United and Aston Villa where the striker was at his best.
Sydney FC boss Terry Butcher has confirmed Sunderland, now managed by Roy Keane, are in talks, but confirmed no agreement between the clubs had been reached.
"Sunderland and Sydney FC are in negotiations for the transfer back to England," explained Butcher.
"They are ongoing but with no resolution at the moment. He still believes he can prove himself on the biggest stage.
"It will be a big loss to us and to the A-League because he's our marquee player and will be difficult to replace. We would like him to stay, he's a great player."
Meanwhile, the North East outfit are also being linked with moves for Republic of Ireland trio Liam Miller, Jonathon Douglas and Andy O'Brien.
