Makelele in line for Bleus start

Claude Makelele will start for France against Italy despite recent controversies.

Raymond Domenech has confirmed that Claude Makelele will start against Italy, but has refused to elaborate on whether the Chelsea midfielder will continue to be a part of his international plans.

Makelele's presence in Les Bleus's squad has become a major bone of contention as he had opted to retire from the international scene following the World Cup final defeat to Wednesday's opponents.

After Domenech called Makelele up against his will, with a club suspension possible should he not join up with the team, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho sparked outrage by claiming his midfielder was being treated like 'a slave'.

However, Domenech has no intentions of dropping the holding midfielder who is an integral part of his side and played an hour in the 3-0 win over Georgia on Saturday.

"There is at least one player who is sure to play on Wednesday," said Domenech, referring to Makelele.

Casting an eye towards the future, Domenech remained coy over whether he will continue to pick the Chelsea man despite the massive falling out between club and country.

"For the moment, there is the match against Italy. After that, we will see," Domenech continued.

"The players who are available and who are playing at a high level are those who are up for selection.

"That will depend on my goodwill and my goodwill only."

Midfield partner Patrick Vieira believes that Makelele is keen to continue with the national side despite his desire to quit earlier in the summer.

"His position is difficult, but I believe, deep down, he wants to continue," said Vieira.

"We have spoken about it a bit, and for me there is no doubt.

"What makes me pleased is seeing how he is with us in the squad. He is the same, he is Claude.

"I hope he will continue the adventure."

The Chelsea man is struggling slightly with an ankle problem, along with Manchester United striker Louis Saha, but Domenech is convinced he will have the two Premiership performers at his disposal in Paris against the world champions.

"It is okay but they must train like normal on Tuesday afternoon," Domenech added. "There is no worry there.

"I know the team in my head but there are a few uncertainties. But so as not to take any risks, we will confirm it on Wednesday."
