David Trezeguet will miss France's opening two qualifiers for the 2008 European Championship.
The Juventus striker is being forced to sit out the games against Georgia and Italy after being hampered by a groin problem.
He has returned to Turin for treatment on the complaint after being unable to train with his international team-mates.
France coach Raymond Domenech has opted to defer a decision on a replacement and will call up attacking cover, if there is an injury picked up in the Georgia game.
Meanwhile, Domenech is refusing to put any focus on the World Cup final rematch with Italy next Wednesday.
Les Bleus host the world champions in midweek, but Domenech is adamant the priority should be concentrating on Saturday's clash in Georgia.
Domenech said: "Thinking of the match against Italy? We can't fall into that trap.
"So, on Saturday night, Italy doesn't exist.
"Before that, we are only preparing for the match in Tbilisi. We can only show respect towards Georgia.
"They have scored six goals against Faroe Islands and we know it is not that easy.
"Georgians are good players. They love to play and are not afraid.
"Now, a new competition is starting. We have to keep the same ambition as previously - trying to go as far as possible."
