The news is a blow for England as the Canadian-born star is currently in favour under new coach Steve McClaren.

Hargreaves played in England's recent wins over Andorra and FYR Macedonia and had looked set to feature against Croatia and their home fixture with FYR Macedonia next month.

The 25-year-old suffered the blow against in Bayern 2-1 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday.

Hargreaves was immediately dispatched for scans on the knock where the break was confirmed.

"After we got back to Munich, we drove to see Dr Muller-Wohlfahrt," he told his personal website.

"It got x-rayed and it was revealed the left fibula was broken.

"I need to wear a plaster for three weeks, then we have to wait and see how the recovery goes."

Hargreaves is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines and could even be out until the New Year recovering.
