Former Dale keeper retires

Former Rochdale goalkeeper Neil Edwards has been forced to retire due to injury.

The 35-year-old, who was released by Bury earlier in the summer, was told by surgeons he would have to hang up his gloves after assessing a damaged shoulder.

Edwards begun his career as a trainee at Leeds before playing over 200 games for Stockport.

However, his eight year spell with Rochdale means he will be most fondly remembered at Spotland, and Edwards says he was 'gutted' to find out his playing days were over.

The Welsh shot stopper will now be able to focus on his fledgling coaching career with Carlisle United.

"When I was told by the doctor that I wouldn't be able to play again I was gutted, despite knowing deep down the news wouldn't be good," Edwards told Rochdale's official website.

"I suppose it would be the same sort of feeling as seeing your numbers come up on the lottery then realising you hadn't bought the ticket.

"That was two weeks ago and it is only just beginning to sink in.

"I'm lucky that I have a job as goalkeeping coach at Carlisle United because I know so many players who disappear from the game that could contribute a hell of a lot."
