Five-game ban for van Dijk

Utrecht's Gregoor van Dijk has been banned for five games for kicking Wesley Sneijder.

Utrecht captain Gregoor van Dijk has accepted a five-match ban for kicking Ajax's Wesley Sneijder in the face.

Both the 24-year-old and his Eredivisie club have opted not to contest the suspension handed down by the Dutch FA (KNVB) on Tuesday.

The former Groningen and Roda JC Kerkrade man was given his marching orders for kicking out at Sneijder, who was on the ground, during Sunday's 3-2 defeat home defeat to Ajax.

Van Dijk fuelled his intention to harm the Holland international when he told the Dutch press before the game that Sneijder could be a target.

Utrecht chairman Jan Willem van Dop felt Utrecht had little choice but to accept the KNVB's punishment.

"We have watched the pictures a couple of times," van Dop told Utrecht's official website.

"With that, and on the background of certain statements that Gregoor made in an interview before the match has made us content, with our lawyer, to decide to accept the punishment."
