Bantams veteran signs on
Veteran defender David Wetherall has signed a new deal with Bradford City.
Veteran defender David Wetherall has signed a new deal with League One outfit Bradford City. The 35-year-old's previous deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign but, after making his 250th appearance for The Bantams at the weekend, Wetherall has been rewarded with an improved contract.
The former Leeds stopper is now tied to the Yorkshire club until 2010, but chairman Julian Rhodes has allowed Wetherall to retire at any time and move into coaching as part of the arrangement.
"David will probably carry on playing for many years to come," Rhodes told the Telegraph & Argus.
"But there is the option that if he wants to take up a coaching role then he can do. I'm sure he will make a good coach and manager one day."
Wetherall, though, has no intention of hanging up his boots just yet and hopes to continue starring for The Bantams until his body can longer sustain his form.
"I certainly won't outstay my welcome, it is more how I feel and when I feel I am not doing a job for the club or get up in the morning and the aches and pains are too much to bear," said Wetherall.
"I am obviously going to play this year and certainly the next one and then I will see after that."
