Charlton: Scholes a true great

Sir Bobby Charlton has hailed Paul Scholes as one of Man Utd's greatest ever players.

Sir Bobby Charlton has hailed Paul Scholes as one of Manchester United's greatest ever players.

The quiet and unassuming 31-year-old is set to join an elite band of eight players to have made 500 appearances for The Red Devils, against Liverpool on Sunday.

He has been a fine servant at Old Trafford, making his name as one of the cleanest strikers of a ball ever seen at The Theatre of Dreams.

And after last season's eye problems that threatened to scupper a glittering career, Charlton has paid tribute to a true professional of the modern era modelled in his own ilk.

"Paul Scholes is without any shadow of a doubt one of the finest midfield players Manchester United has ever produced," the United legend enthused to the Sun.

"I can't believe he is already about to make his 500th appearance. To me he is still the young lad I saw 12 years ago - he is naturally gifted with great vision.

"We were all worried when he had an eye problem last season but it was wonderful to have him back after a long lay-off.

"His return to the team was like signing a new player. I can't speak highly enough of Paul Scholes."

The sprightly red-headed midfielder opened his account for the season with a typically sweetly struck goal from outside the area in the midweek UEFA Champions League win over FC Copenhagen.

He still has some way to go to reach Charlton's record 759 appearances for the club, but Scholes will be anxious to impress in his landmark showdown with The Merseysiders live on Sky Sports 1 from 12.30pm.
