Vidic celebrates first goal

Nemanja Vidic has set his sights on more goals after scoring his first Man Utd goal.

Nemanja Vidic has set his sights on more goals after opening his Manchester United account in the 3-1 victory over Wigan on Saturday.

The Serbian defender set United on their way to a thrilling second half comeback against The Latics with a powerful header, and he was delighted to get his name on the scoresheet.

He intends to continue pressing forward whenever he can, although he insists he will never neglect his defensive duties.

"I hope I start to score more than one goal for Manchester but we will see," said the 24-year-old, who moved to Old Trafford in January.

"First and foremost I am a defender. If it is possible to score then I will but I need to protect my goal first of all.

"I am certainly happy with my first goal for United but most important was the fact we won and got the three points."

Vidic believes the Wigan game was a potential banana skin for United following the international break, but he was pleased with the way his side rallied.

"In the first half we didn't play very well," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"We knew we had to start to play better to win. But it is always difficult every time we come back from international games.

"You train differently with your national teams and then you arrive back at United the day before a game and it is difficult to adapt.

"But in the second half we played much better at Wigan. We had more chances and scored three goals and showed everybody we are a good team.

"We are getting better and better."

"We have two important games now against Copenhagen and Liverpool and we need to play like we did in the second half in those games if we want to win."
