Frey to fight for France spot

Sebastien Frey is delighted to be back involved with France's national team.

The 26-year-old has not played for Les Bleus since 2004 but returned to Raymond Domenech's squad against the Faroe Islands last month.

An injury to Gregory Coupet meant Frey was back in the fold again and he is hoping to hold onto his place after working hard to win it back.

"Why did the France team forget me for so long? Maybe because I left the country very early?" Frey told Skysports.com.

"I have always tried to show the coaches I should be called up and have always respected their decisions.

"Of course, when you are left out you are not happy. I am delighted to be back with Les Bleus, I hope to remain.

"I don't think I'll be fighting for a starting place at Euro 2008 but just to be part of the squad would be brilliant."

Frey remains happy with his decision to quit French football and move to Italy in 1998.

"I moved to the Italian league as a youngster and I wanted to prove I could play at the highest level," he said.

"That is why I made a couple of declarations saying I wanted to replace Gianluca Pagliuca. But he is a legend and I knew I would have to sit on the bench for a while.

"It hasn't been easy to impose myself, but I have finally created my own image and am recognised for my value."

Frey believes he has grown up as a person since his arrival in Italy at the tender age of 18.

"I am less impetuous," he continued. "When you are young you can make errors in what you say.

"People have said I am arrogant but I am not, I just want to reach my objectives.

"I have the mentality of a winner, I want to be the best."

Frey's club side Fiorentina currently find themselves struggling at the foot of the Serie A table as a result of the penalty handed out to them following the match-fixing scandal over the summer.

The Viola are still nine points adrift of safety but Frey remains confident they can avoid relegation.

"We are mentally ready to avoid relegation," he insisted. "Maybe we will be lucky and will recover some points thanks to the commission."

Meanwhile, Frey refused to rule out the possibility of plying his trade in The Premiership in the future.

The Frenchman has been targeted by some of Europe's top clubs in the past and says England would be a possible destination.

Frey added: "All the doors are open, I don't know if I will spend my entire career in Italy.

"I also love England and thanks to my physical skills, the challenges wouldn't cause me problems."
