Dyer jinx strikes again

Kieron Dyer's Newcastle comeback has been halted by a 'freak' eye injury.

Kieron Dyer's injury jinx has returned to haunt the Newcastle midfielder once again with an eye injury now expected to keep him out of action for two weeks.

The Magpies star made his first appearance since April in the 3-0 Carling Cup win over Portsmouth in midweek and was looking forward to making his long-awaited Premiership comeback in Saturday's game against Charlton, live on PremPlus.

However a 'freak' training ground incident has now resulted in the latest fitness problem to afflict Dyer, with the 27-year-old having only just recovered from a string of groin and hamstring problems.

Magpies boss Roeder confirmed the blow to the midfielder as he rued the luck that has stunted Dyer's progression in recent seasons.

"Kieron took a knock to his left eye on Friday morning in what can only be described as a freak accident," confirmed Roeder.

"We immediately took him to see a specialist and his advice was that he needs to rest and not to take part in any contact training for at least two weeks.

"Kieron does not deserve such wretched luck to happen little more than a day after getting back out on the pitch against Portsmouth, when for 30 minutes he showed the kind of electric pace and ability that we know he is capable of.

"It is such cruel luck to be robbed of his services, but we have just got to stand up and be counted and move forward in a positive way, starting with Charlton on Saturday."
