Hughes in Spireites trial

Former Oldham midfielder Mark Hughes has pitched up at Chesterfield on trial.

Former Oldham midfielder Mark Hughes has pitched up at Chesterfield as he looks to earn a permanent deal at Saltergate.

The Northern Ireland international was recently released by Oldham after falling down the club's midfield pecking order following the appointment of John Sheridan in the summer.

Hughes played 73 games whilst at Boundary Park but it is at Chesterfield, who beat Oldham on Wednesday night, that he will try to rejuvenate his somewhat stalled career.

Chesterfield boss Roy McFarland has confirmed that he is on the lookout for fresh faces and is willing to run the rule over former Spurs youngster Hughes in the next few days.

"With a busy schedule of fixtures coming up, and only a small squad to play with, we are always looking at opportunities to strengthen our squad," he told the club's official website.
