The former England midfielder was taken to a London police station after a man alleged he had been assaulted at a nightclub in South Kensington, reports the Press Association.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "Police were called at approximately 3.40am by a 43-year-old man who alleged that he had been assaulted by another man at a club in South Kensington.
"Following inquiries, a 39-year-old man was arrested at a separate club nearby at 4.15am on suspicion of actual bodily harm and is currently in custody at a south west London police station."
It is not thought that the victim of the alleged assault required hospital treatment.
