Barton backing Richards call-up

Joey Barton believes Micah Richards fully deserves his England call-up.

The Citizens stopper was the new face in squad named by Steve McClaren for next week's friendly with Holland.

Barton believes Richards more than justifies his call-up as he is one of the country's best right backs, despite City's inauspicious start to the season.

"He deserves it. When you look about the country he's as good as any right back out there," Barton told Sky Sports News.

"Hopefully he goes in and does well and shows what he can do and gives a good account of himself because he's definitely one for future World Cups.

"It's a little bit harder to get noticed (as a defender). He's been very consistent since he's come into the first-team squad. He's taken everything in his stride.

"Everyone hopes he goes and does well there. It only bodes well for the reputation of this football club again."
