Ascoli appoint Sonetti

Ascoli have appointed Nedo Sonetti as their new coach.

Ascoli have appointed Nedo Sonetti as their new coach.

He will replace Attilio Tesser, who was sacked on Monday following their seventh defeat in 11 games against Empoli, which left them 17th in the table.

Sonetti has signed a deal with president Roberto Benigni's side until the end of the current campaign, with an option to extend it to the end of the following season.

The 65-year-old coach has had a string of previous coaching roles, most recently guiding Cagliari to safety in Serie A at the end of last season, but was out of work when he received the approach from Ascoli.

Sonetti had coached Ascoli during the 1990/91 season, in which he gained promotion to the top flight, and believes his main task this time around is to revive the players' confidence.

"The problem is believing in themselves," Sonetti told Italian media. "They need to be self-motivated, firstly at an individual level and then as a group."
