Angel anger at James decision

Juan Pablo Angel felt David James should have been sent off in the draw at Fratton Park.

Villa hero Juan Pablo Angel felt Pompey keeper David James should have been sent off in the 2-2 draw at Fratton Park.

James fouled Gabby Agbonlahor in the first half to give Villa a penalty converted by Gareth Barry but was only given a yellow card by referee Uriah Rennie.

There was some debate whether James was the last man but Villa substitute Angel, who scored an 82nd minute equaliser, was convinced the former England keeper should have been dismissed.

"It should have been a red card without a doubt. Their substitute goalkeeper was doing a warm-up straight away because he thought he was going to be sent off," said the Colombian

"In my eyes I think he should definitely have been sent off."

Villa boss Martin O'Neill also thought James should have seen red.

"My own view is Gabby is in control of the ball and he can slide the ball across goal before the defenders get back on the line. The referee interprets it differently and James stays on the park to play a major role in the game.

"He's in absolutely outstanding form at the moment and played a significant role. It's a debatable point and a major one in the game."

O'Neill was pleased with Angel's contribution after leaving him on the bench for the first time in the Premiership.

"I'm delighted for him," he said. "In front of goal it's been difficult but he has scored a number of goals for us and that might give him a lift in confidence.

"He's played a lot of games for us - he's started every single game - but when Juan Pablo came on he made a difference."
