Drogba hails Chelsea bench
Didier Drogba feels Wednesday night's win was a victory for Chelsea's squad.
Chelsea striker Didier Drogba feels Wednesday night's victory over Newcastle emphasised the importance of having strength in depth.Jose Mourinho was afforded the luxury of starting the 1-0 Carling Cup quarter-final victory over Newcastle with Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack and Drogba all on the bench.
However, when Chelsea put in an uninspired display at St James' Park, Mourinho called on the latter three, with Drogba again enjoying another excellent night as his fine free-kick proved to be the only goal.
Whilst admitting he is not accustomed to having to come into games as a substitute, Drogba was keen to point out the importance of having a large squad at Mourinho's disposal, in what is sure to be a busy festive period.
"I always try to give everything I can for the team - but it's very difficult to come in from the bench," he told Sky Sports.
"Frank Lampard came on and made a difference and so did Michael Ballack - it's very important to have a strong bench for different competitions."
