Montella has Fulham lesson

Vincenzo Montella says a history lesson was all it took to convince him to join Fulham.

Vincenzo Montella has revealed a lesson in history was all it took to convince him to join Fulham.

The Roma striker has moved to Craven Cottage on a six-month loan after falling out of favour at the Stadio Olimpico but is not expected to make the move permanent as his family are staying in Italy.

The 32-year-old will join his new team-mates at Leicester for the FA Cup tie and could make his debut as a substitute.

The Italy international is already keen to make his Premiership bow and is aware of the traditions behind his new club.

"It was a very difficult decision to leave Roma because they have given me some wonderful experiences and I had to think hard about it," Montella said.

"But I am very aware of the traditions at Fulham and I have read up on its history. I know it is one of the oldest clubs in the country and the oldest club in London and that was important.

"Fulham are moving in the right direction and showing ambition in the players they are bringing to the club.

"It will take a while for me to get to know everyone and I need some training because I have been on a mid-season break in Italy. I need to become accustomed to the rhythm of the game in the Premiership."

The Cottagers beat off competition from Paris Saint Germain to sign Montella, who lost his first-team place at Roma to Francesco Totti.

Manager Chris Coleman said: "I am delighted that we have been able to bring in a player of Vincenzo's quality to assist us with the latter half of this season's campaign."

Meanwhile, Michael Brown has been handed the club captaincy following the departure of Luis Boa Morte to West Ham.

"Michael Brown is an infectious player who's led by example this season through his performances on the pitch," Coleman told the club's website.

"He's been there for us all season and has possibly been one of the club's most consistent players."
