Reading on brink of Bennett deal

Reading have announced they are close to completing the signing of Alan Bennett.

Reading have announced that they are close to completing the signing of Irish defender Alan Bennett.

Steve Coppell has been following the Cork City star for some time, and after the Premiership club finally had a bid accepted, Bennett has now agreed personal terms and completed a medical at The Madejski Stadium.

Cork had been reluctant to lose their star defender and had turned down previous offers from Reading for the 25-year-old.

However, Bennett will now follow Kevin Doyle and Shane Long in making the trip from Cork to Reading with only minor issues still to be resolved before a deal is ratified.

"Reading Football Club can confirm that we have reached an agreement with Cork City for the transfer of Alan Bennett," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The 25-year-old defender is in Reading today (Tuesday), having completed his medical.

"Bennett signed the agreement at 8pm last night and the club are now tying up loose ends to complete the transfer."
