Richard Carpenter has left Brighton & Hove Albion by mutual consent. The 34-year-old midfielder, who signed from Cardiff in 2000, has struggled for form and fitness this season and has now been told he is not part of Dean Wilkins' plans for the future.
Carpenter's contract was due to expire in June 2007 but Brighton have agreed a settlement with the player and he has now joined non-league side Welling United.
"I've no hard feelings, although I'm disappointed with the way it's ended this season," he told Brighton's official website.
"I haven't played as many games as I would have liked, due to suspension and injury."
Wilkins added: "From my experience of working with him, he's the ultimate professional footballer - both on and off the pitch.
"His attitude and application from Monday through to Saturday was superb.
"I have great admiration for him and I'm sorry it's ended like this, but it's a mutual decision and I wish him all the best for the future."
Carpenter made almost 300 appearances for Brighton and scored 24 goals.
Joe O'Cearuill, meanwhile, has signed an extension to his loan agreement with Brighton and will now stay with the club until March 3.
