Emerson's future uncertain

Real Madrid's Emerson is set to decide his future at the end of the season.

Emerson is set to decide his future at the end of the season after enduring a tough first term in Spain with Real Madrid.

The Brazilian midfielder could be tempted back to Italy after being on the receiving end of jeers from supporters in the Bernabeu.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello brought the 30-year-old with him from Juventus when he joined the Spanish club last summer, but neither have enjoyed a happy stint with the side.

Emerson still has two seasons left to run on his contract but has hinted that he could request a transfer before then.

"I am calm which is a different thing to being happy," Emerson told AS. "This cannot go on much longer. I will keep going until the end of the season and then see.

"It was my true intention to complete my contract. I chose to come to Real Madrid and try a new adventure, but if things stay like this then it will be impossible to stay."

With Madrid struggling by their standards in the league this campaign, Emerson appears to have been singled out by sections of the Madrid supporters, although he does not understand why.

"It is a mystery. I know that football can be difficult, but I should not complain. The current situation is difficult, at least for me," he said.

"The supporters in the Bernabeu do not forgive me for anything. From the first pass onwards they have appeared to be against me.

"I came to Real Madrid with the label of being one of Fabio Capello's signings, maybe that has created some unease, especially now that the coach is under pressure.

"Really though, I do not understand the reason for all this.

"To be a professional you have to make an effort in training and to give everything during a game.

"But what has happened is that there are now doubts in my mind and they begin to eat away at you over time and the motivation drops.

"This has never happened to me before, not in Brazil, nor Germany nor in Italy, but it is an experience that will help me in the future."

Emerson may opt to return to Italy after revealing he still has strong connections there.

"It is my second home after Brazil. My daughter Carolina lives in Rome, where she really likes it," he continued.

"I have many friends there and there are many more things that I like about the country and I understand the mentality and the habits of the people.

"My pride tells me to stick it out in Spain, but I shall see. The saying that you never know what will happen in the future applies to me.

"I speak to several of my former team-mates there and with Patrick Vieira at Inter."
