Nugent delight at debut strike

David Nugent hopes his debut goal will inspire other Championship players.

The Preston striker's late goal was one bright spot in a troubled evening for England boss Steve McClaren as his side laboured to a 3-0 win over Andorra.

Nugent - who became the first outfield player from outside the top flight to appear for England this century - was introduced on 79 minutes in Barcelona and marked the historic moment with a true poacher's goal.

Jermain Defoe's shot had already reached the goal-line when Nugent put his boot through the ball, but the in-demand Preston star insisted there was no lingering resentment from his international colleague.

Nugent also voiced his hope that his opportunistic debut strike could encourage other players in England's second tier to pursue their international ambitions.

"I've had 15 texts on my phone saying it was my goal so I'll be claiming it," Nugent told Sky Sports.

"He would have done the same thing he said, and everyone is made up for me.

"One cap, one goal, you can't go wrong. It's just unbelievable, scoring on your debut.

"Playing in the Championship as well, there is no better feeling, and it gives hope to all the other Championship players.

"The chance is there, if you keep on playing and scoring you might get that chance as well."
